What is the best angle for solar panels?

The short answer: tilt your panels at roughly your latitude and point them toward the equator (True South in the northern hemisphere, True North in the southern hemisphere). That single setting gives strong output all year.

If you want to squeeze out every kilowatt-hour, two refinements help:

1. Optimise for the whole year

The angle that maximises annual energy is slightly lower than your latitude, because summer days are long and the sun is high. A well-established formula (Landau) is:

The month-by-month angles, explained

The monthly chart uses the sun's declination β€” how far north or south the sun sits in the sky on a given day. The tilt that points your panel straight at the midday sun is:

Which way should the panels face?

Direction matters as much as tilt. Aim for True South in the northern hemisphere and True North in the southern hemisphere. Note that a magnetic compass points to magnetic north, which can be several degrees off from true north depending on where you are, so adjust for your local magnetic declination when aligning panels precisely.
